What is Turbo Networking?

The term "Turbo Networking" as it applies to the conference and trade show industry first appeared in an article by Susan Hatch in "Meetings & Incentives" February 1, 2005. She used the term to describe a better way to network at an event. In her article she states:

"FEW WOULD ARGUE that milling about at coffee breaks or walking aisles of eager exhibitors is the most efficient way to network. Yet that's the business model. Lanyards around our necks, business cards at the ready, we work the sessions, the booths, the breaks, the dinners because — as they always say — one good connection at a meeting makes the whole thing worthwhile."

Ms. Hatch knew there had to be a better way for people to meet and network. So, the term "Turbo Networking" was born. She used it to describe new conference and trade show tools being developed to help trade show and conference participants meet. She went on to say:

"Turbo Networking applications range widely in style and scope but have several things in common. The most important being that after attendees register for a conference, they are asked to complete a profile of their responsibilities and interests, product focus, or reasons for attending. From these profiles, the systems create searchable, content-rich databases."

We believe Turbo Networking can be much, much more. Turbo Networking is not just about providing an online social networking application for pre-conference strangers to meet; it is also how attendees interact with other attendees prior to the conference. Attendees can finally meet, in advance, the person who will probably be sitting to their right or to their left as they sit in on a conference session. This is "Turbo Networking" in it's finest form, when the mingling isn't done during the coffee breaks, but rather is online, prior to showing up for the conference.

Turbo Networking is about session or keynote speakers having a dialog with attendees online, prior to the conference to better understand why they're traveling to the conference in the first place. Turbo Networking allows for press editors to meet attendees who use, or plan to use, the products they're writing about in an upcoming issue of their magazine.

EventMingle.com was designed, from the ground up, to go way beyond what Turbo Networking is today. EventMingle.com will push the term, "Turbo Networking" to new heights allowing for pre-conference strangers to become friends.
